Project Overview - Moxie & Roxie are a pair of fearless eleven-year-old inventors whose curiosity consistently outpaces common sense—and occasionally, federal regulations.
Inspired by Saturday morning cartoons, classic adventure serials, and the boundless imagination of childhood, the duo represents two very different approaches to solving impossible problems. Together, they've accidentally rewritten the laws of engineering, challenged the limits of aerospace technology, and probably voided more warranties than anyone in recorded history.
This project explores how strong character design extends beyond appearance. Every invention, expression, and design decision helps reinforce each girl's unique personality while creating a believable partnership built on imagination, friendship, and just enough scientific chaos.
The Concept - Every great adventure begins with one simple question:
"What if kids were actually smarter than all of us?"
Moxie and Roxie aren't superheroes.
They don't have magical powers.
They're simply brilliant enough that the impossible feels routine.
Whether they're building homemade rocket packs, redesigning spacecraft, or quietly improving NASA technology over summer vacation, their adventures celebrate curiosity, creativity, and the idea that imagination is the greatest invention of all.
Meet Moxie
Chief Chaos Engineer
Moxie has never met an engine she couldn't improve—or accidentally launch into low Earth orbit.
Long before most kids learned to ride a bicycle, Moxie was assembling rocket engines in her mom's garage. Local mechanics have long since accepted the fact that an eleven-year-old is the best person to diagnose problems with a classic 350 V8, and her family has simply learned not to ask too many questions whenever another experimental vehicle appears in the driveway.
Her latest projects include a hydrogen fuel cell-powered stroller for her baby brother, complete with VR remote control (because walking is terribly inefficient), and a series of experimental jetpacks that eventually led her to meet another engineering prodigy named Roxie.
Moxie believes there isn't a problem that can't be solved with more horsepower.
She's probably right.
Meet Roxie
Chief Systems Architect
While most fifth graders spent summer vacation roasting marshmallows, Roxie quietly optimized portions of the Apollo 13 return trajectory inside NASA's flight simulators.
After being discovered running unauthorized simulations by astronaut Ken Mattingly, her calculations proved so accurate that she was quietly recruited into NASA's Junior Astronaut Program.
Officially, none of this ever happened.
Unofficially...
She's the youngest person ever to perform a solo spacewalk aboard the International Space Station and already holds patents for gravity-correction thrusters currently being adapted for future Mars missions.
Roxie doesn't build things because they're exciting.
She builds them because she already knows they'll work.
Better Together - Moxie and Roxie first crossed paths while discussing gravity-correction thrusters on a niche engineering subreddit.
One conversation became hundreds.
Soon they were collaborating on experimental propulsion systems, designing advanced flight helmets with integrated life support and augmented reality displays, and pushing each other's ideas further than either could have imagined alone.
Moxie dreams up impossible inventions.
Roxie quietly figures out how to make them possible.
Neither one understands the meaning of "good enough."
Design Challenge - The challenge wasn't simply designing two memorable characters—it was creating a partnership where each individual felt distinct while still belonging to the same world.
Although both girls are engineering prodigies, their personalities solve problems in completely different ways. Moxie is driven by fearless experimentation and boundless enthusiasm, while Roxie approaches every challenge with precision, analysis, and meticulous planning.
Their visual designs reinforce those differences. Moxie's rounded forms, bright colors, expressive gestures, and energetic posture reflect her spontaneous nature. Roxie's more composed stance and thoughtful demeanor suggest someone who is always calculating three steps ahead.
Even their inventions tell the story. Moxie's creations often begin as wonderfully outrageous ideas, while Roxie's refinements transform those ideas into functioning technology. Together, they embody the balance between imagination and engineering.

Reflection - Moxie and Roxie began as an exploration of how personality can drive design. Every hairstyle, accessory, invention, and expression exists to reinforce who these characters are and how they interact with the world around them.
While their adventures are intentionally exaggerated, their friendship is grounded in something universal: the joy of creating impossible things together. The project reminds me that memorable characters aren't defined by what they can do—they're defined by why they do it.
